International Students

International students are welcome at Luther King house.  We have hosted Chevening scholars and students financed via funding from the Council For World Mission as well as students who are self-financing.

Luther King House has been granted a UKBA Tier 4 with A rated status which allows us to sponsor international students.  We expect to apply for highly trusted status in near future.

When making an application you should send a photocopy or electronic scan of the details page of your passport and relevent qualifications which you should certify is a true copy of the original.

It is important that every student is able to read and write English well and that you can comply with UK Borders Agencies requirements for study.  Even when students come from countries where English is spoken such as India or South Africa, they may still need to provide evidence of proficiency in English, for example through successful completion of secure English language test.  Look at the UKBA information for a list of secure English tests to see which test is most suitable for you.

It is unusual for LKH to recruit students to our undergraduate course from overseas since a placement where a student has an environment to explore and implement class-room learning is essential.  However, if your church has an international base then you may be able to identify a suitable placement early on in the application process.  Students without a receiving church in the UK will almost always be rejected.

International students' registration and essential induction for overseas students take place on 1st September of each year.  Students will be allocated individual appointments with the registrar.

At present, LKH only admits students in September, although there are plans to explore a January admission period.

Regretfully, there are very limited bursary funds and any students contemplating moving to the UK to study should ensure that they have sufficient finance to meet both their fees and their own living costs. The British Council is a UK Government funded body which has a wealth of information about studying in the UK:  http://www.britcoun.org/

accredited until 2013

Adopt a Library Book at Luther King House Library Print

It is now four years since the library reopened after a major redevelopment.  We now have nearly 500 members who enjoy the much-improved facilities.  The library provides vital access not only to books and journals, but also to electronic resources (online journals and e-books), computing facilities and study and learning support.

Use of the library is increasing year on year, and many students comment that they could not have completed their study and training without relying on its facilities and the support of library staff.

However, these are difficult times.  The library budget is under threat and we have already had to cut our subscriptions to several academic journals due to rising costs that we are unable to meet.  There are many resources that we would like to purchase in order to help our library grow to meet the needs of our students, but at present we are simply unable to do so.

We have introduced a new fundraising scheme in order to help us maintain the excellent and essential services and facilities that are provided by our library.

Our Adopt a Book scheme allows you to show your support for the library, its collections and work, by adopting a book.

Demonstrate your interest in a particular subject area by selecting from our list.  We will purchase a book in your chosen subject area that we would not normally have been able to afford to buy.  Adopt a Book is a meaningful way to support the work of the library, students, researchers and teaching staff, as well as contributing towards learning and research in the subject area of your choice.

Every Adopt a Book member receives a certificate, and we create a bookplate with your chosen text for the adopted item.  Bookplates are a valuable and affordable way to:

•Mark an event (for example, a birthday or other anniversary, a marriage or partnership, your own or a colleague’s retirement)

•Celebrate your graduation, or that of someone close to you

•Remember the life of a friend, relation or colleague

Whatever the reason, your bookplate will be visible for all to see - a great way to share with others your event, special occasion or support for the work of the library.

Here’s what to do if you would like to Adopt a Book:

  1. Complete the form below and post it, together with your cheque for your chosen amount (made payable to ‘Luther King House’), to the address on the form.
  2. We will send you details of the book that has been purchased with your donation.  We will also send you a certificate, together with a copy of the title page of your book showing your bookplate.
  3. Your name will be added to our register of adopters, and you have the pleasure of knowing that you have helped contribute towards the learning, teaching and research that takes place at Luther King House.
