Luther King House Open College is one of the five colleges that comprise the Luther King House Educational Trust (LKHET).
Who Studies through our Open College?
The Open College is not attached to a particular denomination, and welcomes lay and ordained students from across the region and further afield.
If you are a layperson wanting to study theology and develop your ministerial skills without training as an ordained minister for a particular denomination, you apply to study at Luther King House through our Open College. Open College is also for those who are already ordained and want to engage in further study for their own personal development.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degree Programmes
You can study full-time or part-time through our Open College, on our full range of courses.
The University of Chester validates our undergraduate degrees.
The University of Manchester validates our postgraduate degrees.
Students learn through classes, tutorials, private study and through practically applying what they learn in their own church and community settings.
Our Open College students attend classes with others from each of the denominations present at LKH but also gather together for Open College sessions covering topics as diverse as career development, retreat exercises and end of year celebrations.
The President of LKHET, Dr David Goodbourn, provides the academic lead for Luther King House Open College. Tutorial support is provided from within the pool of LKHET staff.
Whether you are a lay person or an ordained minister, through our courses we encourage and enable you to relate your theological learning to your own ministry context in your church or in the wider community, exploring how your theological understanding might shape your practice, and how your ministry context might shape your understanding of theology.
Short Courses and Studying for Personal Interest (not towards a degree)
Short Courses in Theology, Ministry and Discipleship
You are also able to attend many of our taught courses just for your own personal interest, at a significantly reduced cost, without needing to submit any work for assessment and without gaining formal accreditation.
Our "Explorations" Guided Reading Scheme lets you explore a particular area of interest through your own private study, with one-to-one tutor support.
