Luther King House is committed to making Christian Education accessible to as many as possible but the costs involved in running our courses mean that there is a charge for joining classes.
Any potential student who is interested in studying a theology "short course" with us for personal development may do so for as little as just over £5 per session attended. There is a higher charge for people taking modules which form part of a degree, which reflects the costs faced by Luther King House in providing degree courses.
Government Funding: Grants and Loans for First-time Degree Students
UK and EU students on our undergraduate degree courses who have not previously studied at degree level qualify for government finance towards all or part of their course fees and living costs. Many students qualify for payment of their full maintenance costs. For more information, contact the Luther King House Registry Office.
LKH Bursary Fund
For undergraduate and postgraduate students who do not qualify for government finance, the LKH Educational Trust Bursary Committee has decided to make available funding for bursaries, which could reduce tuition fees for undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses to a total payment due of as little as £2700 for a complete year of full time academic study commencing in September 2011. We also offer pro-rata bursaries for part-time students. The Bursary Committee has attempted to make calculation of bursaries as simple as possible. Scroll down to see how this applies to students on our theology Foundation Degree, BA and MA courses.
The following rules apply for the granting of bursaries:
- Bursaries are only available for self-financing students admitted to Luther King House's theology degree courses through the Luther King House Open College. A bursary of up to £600.00 for full-time students (or max £300.00 for part-time students) is available for the 2011-12 academic year.
- Bursaries will usually only be granted for tuition fees.
- Some provision of bursaries to assist with travel and overnight accommodation may become available, but the policy is still under review.
- Bursaries will be granted only to those who can show they have already applied for any assistance from public funds for which they might qualify. Such assistance from public funds is usually available only to UK or EU citizens without a local education authority-funded first degree. Applications for bursary assistance may be made pending a final decision by a local education authority
Foundation Degree in Learning for Mission and Ministry
The maximum bursary which will be awarded is £300.00 for part time students and £600.00 for those studying full time. Details of residual income amounts and bursary awards are given below.
MA in Contextual Theology
There is a flexible bursary scheme for the MA programme.
A maximum bursary award of £500 may be made. The principles applied in the bursary table below will be used to assess the amount awarded.
Additionally, a generous donation from the Pratt Green Trust will allow significant discounts for those taking MA Module "Words for Worship". Please ask for more details if this applies to you.
Will I get a bursary?
First, you need to list all sources of household income on your bursary application form. You should include pay, pensions, student loan company grants, income from a spouse or partner, benefits, donations from church sources or from fellow members of your congregation. Income on which you pay tax should be quoted before tax is deducted.
From this sum of total income, you should deduct the allowances relevant to your circumstances:
- For your personal living expenses, deduct £5000
- For each dependant (child, spouse, partner or older relative) deduct a further £2500
- If you have a household to maintain, deduct a further £10,000. If you share the cost of maintaining a household with another person (which might be your partner, or it might be that you simply rent a room in a shared household), deduct only £5000.
The figure you are now left with is your residual income.
If your residual income is at 15,000 or below then you will receive the maximum part-time or full-time bursary entitlement applicable to your course (see the table below).
Anyone paying by instalments who is entitled to a bursary will receive their bursary allowance as an evenly split reduction in payment charges across all their payment instalments (ie. you pay via a standard number of instalments, but at a lower rate per instalment).
The discount on fees tapers off as residual income rises. If your residual income is £23,000 or more you will pay full fees.
A table allowing students to work out if they are likely to be entitled to a bursary is shown below.
